Johnson Matthey to Expand Printed Circuit Board Operation

Johnson Matthey announces that it has acquired the Buffalo, Minnesota manufacturing plant of Universal Circuits Inc. for $10.5m as part of a programme to expand the capacity of its highly successful multilayer printed circuit board operations in the United States. The company will make further investments at the Buffalo facility over the next 18 months to meet the requirements of its customers.

The Buffalo facility is close to Johnson Matthey Advanced Circuits Inc.'s existing multilayer printed circuit board operations in the Minneapolis area which are operating at close to full capacity. They were acquired by the company in September 1995 and have since grown by some 20% per annum. The business is a leading supplier to companies in the mobile telecommunications, high end computer and semiconductor industries and is one of four groups that make up Johnson Matthey's rapidly growing Electronic Materials Division.

Commenting on the acquisition, Dr Michael Cleare, Managing Director of the Electronic Materials Division, said:

"The Universal Circuits Inc. facility that we are acquiring is only two years old and can be rapidly adapted to supply the high tech products demanded by our customers. Some additional capacity will be on stream and meeting our customers' requirements in 3 months, at least a year ahead of what could be achieved by starting from scratch"
