Your Training and Development

Whichever area of the organisation you join, you will enter a real job with real responsibilities. Early on there will be the one-on-one training you receive from colleagues. You will also attend relevant events – from technology courses and conferences to computer and language skills training. Soon after you join, you'll start our Business Training Programme.

The Business Training Programme aims to:

  • ensure you gain a broad understanding of our organisation and businesses whilst learning your specific job.
  • develop your commercial awareness and understanding of best business practices.
  • introduce you to a network of colleagues across our business units.
  • inform you of the company strategy and goals by contact with senior executives.

The course runs from October to July in blocks of two-day modules which cover four areas of learning:

  • The European businesses: you visit business units to hear about their work, customers and strategies; take factory tours and learn about the range of products and processes; discover how the businesses interrelate and realise the amazing variety of opportunities available in the future.

  • Personal skills development: you develop transferable skills such as organisation, presentation, writing, cross-cultural communication. The aim is to improve your confidence and effectiveness in business situations.

  • Business awareness: you experience the mix of disciplines that contribute to our success and development – marketing, manufacturing and business finance – providing you with the breadth of understanding to command respect as you progress your career.

  • Project management: you'll develop your leadership and teamworking skills as a member of a cross-divisional team, addressing a 'live' business problem. You'll present your results to the Chief Executive and members of the board.

At the end of the year you'll have a personal development discussion to establish your progress and achievements, explore your aspirations, examine ways to evolve your job and map out action plans to realise your ambitions.

'People listen to you and your contribution is welcomed. The Business Training Programme brings you into contact with people from all areas of the businesses, as well as with board members. This encouragement to think and live company-wide means you get fantastic exposure and that senior people take an interest in you and remember you.'

    Building your Career

We are a task and result-oriented organisation. We seek continuing growth from our businesses and from the individuals who work within them.

Our framework of internal and external courses will ensure that you have the opportunity to match your personal and technical skills development to your ambitions. As well as courses run by top management training providers, we offer you financial support to do the Open University Business School Certificate in Management and individual specialist qualifications, for example, a Diploma in marketing or Chartered status for chemical engineers.

Following the Business Training Programme, after some experience, you have the opportunity to be nominated for the Management Development Programme.

How you decide to apply the skills you build and the qualifications you achieve is down to you – the opportunities to go as far as you choose are certainly available.
